DISCOVER GUATEMALA BEYOND THE GUIDEBOOKS
Most travelers see Guatemala through the same lens — Tikal, Semuc, Antigua, and Lake Atitlán. Our 7- and 10-day Cultural Tours offer something deeper: a meaningful, community-led journey into the heart of Guatemala.
Built in collaboration with local NGOs and cooperatives, these sustainable tours blend adventure and connection — from sunrise volcano viewpoint hikes to coffee farm visits, cooking classes, and conversations with community leaders. Perfect for travelers seeking stories, friendships, and perspectives that reveal the true heart of Guatemala.
7-DAY ROOTS OF GUATEMALA ITINERARY:
DAY 1 – JOURNEY TO THE HIGHLANDS
Travel from Guatemala City or Antigua to Xela (Quetzaltenango), stopping in San Juan Comalapa – often called the “Florence of the Americas” – where vibrant murals depict Guatemala’s journey from ancient Maya heritage to modern resilience. Continue through the scenic highlands to Xela, where cool mountain air and volcanic landscapes await. Then settle in with your homestay family.
DAY 2 – LIFE IN A COFFEE COOPERATIVE
Stay the night in a coffee cooperative founded by ex-guerrilla fighters. Hike through lush coffee fields to a waterfall, share lunch with locals, and hear powerful stories of resilience.
DAY 3 – FROM BEAN TO BAR
Start your morning helping out with daily life with your family in the coffee farm then return to Xela. Visit a Chocolate Museum to craft your own cacao treats and enjoy their rich chocolate fondue served with fresh fruits.
DAY 4 – COOK, CREATE & CONNECT
Join a local NGO for a hands-on cooking class, preparing a traditional Guatemalan dish alongside community members. Over the meal, take part in an engaging discussion about the key social issues shaping life in the region
DAY 5 – VOLCANOES & GIVING BACK
Collaborate with a local organisation for a day of impact and insight. Hike to the Santiaguito Volcano lookout for sweeping highland views, then help distribute meals to families working near local landfills.
DAY 6 – SPRINGS, SALSA & CELEBRATION
Explore Xela before unwinding in the soothing thermal pools of the nearby hot springs. In the evening, gather for a special farewell dinner with your homestay family
Day 7 – LAKE ATITLÁN OR BEYOND
Private transport to Lake Atitlán, Antigua, or Guatemala City OR optional 3-day trek to Lake Atitlán, hiking through mountain villages, experiencing traditional Mayan saunas, and ending with an unforgettable sunrise over the lake.
