LEARN SPANISH IN THE HEART OF GUATEMALA'S HIGHLANDS

Stay with a local family, take one-on-one Spanish lessons, and put your new language skills to use while engaging with grassroots organizations. This is Spanish language learning in action.

2-WEEK ITINERARY:

DAY 1- INTO THE HIGHLANDS

Travel from Guatemala City or Antigua to Xela (Quetzaltenango), stopping at San Juan Comalapa’s beautiful murals to uncover the country’s story. Settle in with your homestay family.

DAY 2 – SPANISH & EVERYDAY LIFE

Join your host family at the local market, enjoy home-cooked meals, and begin personalized Spanish lessons in the afternoon.

DAY 3 – LANGUAGE IN MOTION

Explore Xela’s streets, take a lively salsa class, then return for your daily Spanish session.

DAY 4 & 5 – COFFEE, CONFLICT & COMMUNITY

Stay overnight at a coffee cooperative founded by ex-guerrilla fighters. Walk through coffee fields to a waterfall, share lunch with local families, and hear former fighters reflect on their experiences and the community’s journey.

DAY 6 – COOKING & CONVERSATIONS

Join an NGO for a cooking class on a local dish followed by a lunch discussing key social issues relevant to the community. Continue your Spanish studies in the afternoon.

DAY 7 – GIVE BACK & GAIN PERSPECTIVE

Collaborate with a local organisation, hike to the Santiaguito Volcano lookout, and help distribute meals to families working near the local landfills. Finish the day with a chance to reflect with the organisation on what you did during the day.

Day 8 – CHOCOLATE & LANGUAGE

Enjoy breakfast with your host family, dive into an extended Spanish lesson, then head to a Chocolate Museum to make your own cacao treats and enjoy their chocolate fondu with fresh fruits.

DAY 9 – HOT SPRINGS & RELAXATION

Enjoy a free morning to explore the vibrant streets of Xela before unwinding in the soothing thermal pools of the nearby hot springs.

DAY 10 – SPANISH PRACTICE & PURPOSE

Continue with Spanish lessons, talk with a local NGO partner learning about their mission while putting your Spanish to use.

DAY 11 – STOVE-BUILDING ACTIVITY

Work with a local NGO to help build an energy efficient stove and discover how this simple innovation lowers families expenses and supports environmental sustainability. This activity is accessible to participants of all fitness levels.

DAY 12 – SPANISH CLASSES
Dedicate the day to refining your Spanish and building confidence as you put into practice everything you have learned throughout your journey.

DAY 13 – FREE TIME & SPANISH CLASS
Spend a relaxed morning at your own pace, followed by a final shared lunch with your homestay family. Later complete your last Spanish lessons and reinforce what you’ve learned before coming together for a memorable farewell dinner.

DAY 14 – FAREWELL

Each tour operates with small groups with a minimum of 3 participants, keeping things flexible and personal. Solo travelers can join our scheduled group departures, while private groups can request custom dates.
